Darts fans were furious when spectators at Ally Pally were heard Andrew Gilding.

The former world champion had the unenviable task of taking on 16-year-old darts sensation Luke Littler in the second round of the Paddy Power PDC World Darts Championship. Twenty four hours before, Littler made a huge statement by whitewashing Christian Kist 3-0, finishing the clash with a terrifying average of 106.12.

Gilding, 53, was up next for the youngster and while he made a good fist of the challenge, Littler proved to be too good for him. While many darts fans are backing Littler to go on and win the competition, viewers at home were furious when the popular Gilding was jeered by spectators.

When Gilding stepped up for his walk-on entrance, loud boos and jeers could be heard echoing around Ally Pally. He looked rather taken aback and shocked by the hostile reaction nobody was expecting, let alone him.

However, he still has plenty of fans around the sport, as was proven by the stiff defence he received from a wide variety of people on social media.

One furious fan said: " Andrew Gilding getting booed, this crowd should be severely ashamed of themselves. Booing the GOAT, inconsiderate p****s." A second wrote: " How are people booing Gilding then?"

A third tweeted: "Disgrace to boo Andrew Gilding scums at the darts tonight," before a particularly furious and definitely over the top Gilding fan said: "Anyone that boos Andrew Gilding should receive capital punishment."

While another fan stopped well short of wishing death on Gilding's dissenters, they still commented: " Booing Andrew Gilding is a disgrace." Only Gilding would know whether the hostility at the capital had a bearing on his performance. Littler came roaring out of the traps and quickly raced to a 2-0 lead.

Gilding pulled a set back and had ample opportunities to win the fourth set and force a decider. However, Littler, who appears to have a ruthlessness comparable with champions more than three decades his senior, saw the fourth set out to move into the next stage.
